![]() ![]() I will say, this (in strictly my opinion) falls a little bit short here, and I partially argue that a large component of this is that the world itself, while built to feature the artstyle that the game is presented in, does not have a large viewing point for the player to properly explore and make their own conclusions, as the world is very much only ever a couple levels high and pretty linear. The story, while very well presented, is a little loose and this is also somewhat a staple of Dark Souls games because it allows for open interpretation through Item Descriptions and minor NPC interactions as you progress through the game. You will find yourself moving through levels, fighting enemies that if you reset (effectively resting at a bonfire) will respawn in their typical spots, finding gear, leveling up, and fighting bosses in given areas to progress towards bigger and badder bad guys, while uncovering the story of this game as you go. Rather than being overwhelmed from any number of the 360 degrees that you could be overwhelmed by normally, you're now restricted to the big 4, with a heavy emphasis on purely the left or the right side of your character despite this, the combat remains hard, favors thinking ahead and predicting enemy actions, and (for the most part) prevents spamming away in tense or problematic situations. ![]() Salt and Sanctuary, as previously mentioned, is 2D which means that combat is in some capacity simplified due to the sheer nature of directional options for both attacks and dodging or blocking. It is also probably one of the original few 2D takes on the genre, which is a slight added bonus for how well it those features are implemented as they had less material to pull from than later iterations. You will have to participate in battles – both sea and land.Salt and Sanctuary is a 2D, Platformer that has been (and continues to be) widely regarded as a Souls-like, and, like many of the now existing 2D Soulslike titles out there, does pull many traits of the core gameplay principles of Souls series. ![]()
